Empire State Region Council Local 289’s Apprenticeship Program

The Carpenters Apprentice Program is a four-year commitment that is a combination of classroom learning and job site employment.  Apprentices attend classes for two weeks every six months, a system designed to accommodate the needs of the contractors and apprentices alike.  The program allows carpenters apprentices to earn wages and benefits that enable them to provide for themselves and their families, while learning from the most experienced professionals in both training environments.  As a result, apprentices are continuously building upon their knowledge and skill base in a practical construction site setting.

The Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee is made up of Labor and Management Trustees dedicated to providing the education and on the job training that you need to become a Journeyman Carpenter.

Once a prospective Apprentice is accepted into the program he/she will be registered with the New York State Department of Labor Apprenticeship Training Program and initiated as a member of the Carpenters Local Union 289.

Dedicated instructors, trained by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, provide the classroom instruction and hands on training. The following is a brief list of classes offered: Basic and Advanced Carpentry, Form Work, Interior Systems, Blueprint Reading, Instrument and Surveying, Trim and Hardwood, Stairs, Rafters and Math.  Safety is one of our primary concerns and classes offered include: OSHA 10 Hours, Scaffold Training, Asbestos Awareness, First Aid and CPR.

After successful completion of the required four year training program, each apprentice is tested in the areas covered.  To determine a final passing grade, the apprentice will take exams in applications and theory, an instrument and survey test, tool box inspection and hands on projects.

Graduating Apprentices will receive their Journeyperson Certificates from the State of New York, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and the Empire State Carpenters.

A Journeyperson Carpenter is a craftsperson trained to work in commercial, industrial and residential construction industry.  Your work will include, but not limited to, hospitals, schools, commercial buildings, malls, bridges, and building renovations.
